In a surprising turn of events, this year's IPL 2026 player auction may not take place in India. According to sources, the BCCI is now considering overseas venues, with Abu Dhabi considered the top candidate. Other Gulf locations, including Oman and Qatar, are also being looked at.

This changed from an initial BCCI plan to stage the auction within the country. However, logistical hardship and venue unavailability due to India's festival and heavy wedding season in December are thought to have forced the board to look beyond the borders.

IPL Auction 2026: Possible Date and Venue

The reports suggest that the auction is expected sometime toward the middle of December, likely in the latter half of the month. Sometime before November 15, the announcement of the date and venue is expected, and this is also the deadline by which IPL franchises need to submit their lists for player retention and release ahead of the 19th season of the league.

Franchise Discussions Heat Up

With the retention deadline nearing, franchise activity is in full swing. The potential trade of Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson, first reported by Cricbuzz, continues to dominate discussions. Despite his recent struggles in international cricket, Samson remains a highly valued IPL performer, attracting interest from multiple franchises.

Rajasthan Royals’ lead owner Manoj Badale is set to arrive in Mumbai this week from the UK to finalise major decisions, including the retention or release of spinners Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga. Both players were previously expected to be released during Rahul Dravid’s coaching stint, but with Kumar Sangakkara back in charge, there may be a rethink.

Other Trade and Release Updates

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad are reportedly unwilling to trade pacer Mohammed Shami, despite receiving multiple offers from other franchises. A series of player releases is also expected from Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as teams look to rebuild ahead of the auction.

Key Takeaway

If finalized, this would be the first time in years that the IPL auction takes place outside India. While the Gulf region appears the most likely host, the final call will depend on BCCI’s logistical clearances and availability of an ideal venue.
